How did equal rights between sexes become all about women?

When, in the late 1970s - early 1980s many reasonable feminists realized that they had achieved all that they wanted and "retired" from active feminism. Those that remained, the man-haters, took over mainstream feminism and have retained control over mainstream feminism ever since.
