How do i get tarmac out of my dogs paws?

as our road was being re-surfaced yesterday, my dog got tarmac in his paws from walking on the pavement. We hadn't noticed till he bit out a piece from his paws. we found that there is quite alot of tar in between his paw pads and that alot of it is mixed with his fur. any suggestions on what to do?
