I already have low self-esteem and my boyfriend made this comment. Should I take it wrong?

I'm really fighting with my self-esteem. Anyway, my boyfriend of 3 years always says that he puts me on a pedestal (admires me) and that he finds me beautiful. I think he's a womanizer, though, because he's had a "heavy" past with women. Today, he was talking about this lady he saw on TV and thought she was a knock-out. To my dismay, I said "Would you consider me a knock-out?" And he said "Of course, but she's probably the maximum on the scale". I saw a pic of her and to be honest, she's not good-looking in my books, but whatever. Then, he told me how he likes it when I don't wear make-up and that when I wore a red lipstick, it looked like blood. I told him that I'm allowed to have different looks and that people have actually stopped me to tell me how good I look in that lipstick (I have dark hair, pale skin and green eyes). Should I be insulted? How should I react to these comments?
