Why do some Christians claim their beliefs aren't a religion but are a relationship?

Are they just trying to put Christianity on a pedestal? Deluding themselves that their religion is any different from the others? Like other religions Christianity makes heavy use of a punishment and rewards system (Heaven and Hell) and childhood indoctrination to gain converts.
